A Simple Fig Bowl with Lemon Balm, Honey, and Cardamom. Call it dessert...call it a fruit bowl...I call it delish. It's easy, filling and only has just a few key ingredients. A fresh, sweet and savory moment from the garden...and cardamom...forget about it. It takes this dish to the next level.

There are certain recipes that don’t come from planning. They come from stepping outside, noticing what’s growing, and letting the ingredients speak for themselves. This little fruit bowl is exactly that.
Lemon balm has been thriving in the garden lately, stretching beyond its space, bright and fragrant even in the cold. It’s one of those herbs that doesn’t ask for much but gives so much in return. Soft citrus and mint notes, gentle and calming, and perfect for lifting simple dishes into something special.
Paired with fresh figs, creamy goat cheese, warm cardamom, and a drizzle of honey and olive oil, this dish becomes something quietly beautiful. It’s quick, effortless, and full of layered flavor that feels both rustic and refined.
Why Lemon Balm Deserves the Spotlight
Lemon balm is often tucked into teas or overlooked in the herb garden, but it deserves a place in the kitchen just as much as basil or thyme. It pairs really well with fruits and salads. It has a light, citrusy brightness without the sharpness of lemon juice. Instead, it brings a soft, lemon-mint herbal lift that blends seamlessly into both sweet and savory dishes. In this bowl, it does something subtle but important. It cuts through the richness of the goat cheese, balances the sweetness of the honey and figs, and ties everything together in a way that feels fresh and intentional. And the best part, is that it's super easy to grow and it grows generously. It will take over your garden if you don't plant it in a raised bed or pot. Even when the weather is still cool, it continues to show up.

One of the most beautiful things about this dish is how incredibly versatile it is. If figs aren’t your thing or they’re not in season, this bowl still shines with so many other fruits. Juicy plums, bright citrusy oranges, sweet berries, ripe peaches, nectarines, or even a mix of everything all together works beautifully here. Each fruit brings its own personality to the bowl, shifting the flavor just enough to make it feel new every time. I’ve made this recipe with all of them, sometimes combining whatever I have on hand, and it never disappoints. It’s the kind of recipe that invites you to work with what you’ve got and trust that it will come together effortlessly.
The same goes for the texture and toppings. If walnuts aren’t your thing, pecans are a perfect swap and bring their own warm, buttery richness. Cardamom is what ties it all together. Cardamom kicks this dish into a new direction. It pairs so naturally with fruit, adding a soft, aromatic warmth that makes the dish feel just a little elevated without any extra effort. No matter how you mix and match the ingredients, that balance of sweet fruit, with the sea salt and creamy cheese, and warm spice always finds its way back, making this a go-to dish you can reinvent again and again.

A Balance of Flavor in Every Bite
This dish is all about contrast in the best way.
The figs are soft and sweet. The goat cheese is creamy and slightly tangy. The walnuts bring texture and warmth. The lemon balm adds a gentle citrusy mint lift, and the cardamom wraps everything in a subtle, aromatic spice.
Then comes the magic. Honey and olive oil together, finished with sea salt and pepper.
That sweet and salty combination is what makes this bowl unforgettable. It turns a handful of simple ingredients into something you’ll want to make again and again.
Why A Simple Fig Bowl with Lemon Balm, Honey, and Cardamom is so flexible. A Little Fig Hollow Farm Note...
This is the kind of recipe that changes with the seasons and whatever you have on hand.
This same bowl has been made with figs and oranges, ripe plums, handfuls of fresh berries, and every version has been just as beautiful and flavorful.
Use what’s growing. Use what you find. That’s where the best meals begin.
As always, happy creating!
