Nestled in East Texas, Gladewater is a city rich in history and charm, renowned as the "Antique Capital of East Texas." Its journey from a 19th century railroad town to a modern hub for antique enthusiasts is both fascinating and inspiring.

Established in 1873 by the Texas and Pacific Railway Company, Gladewater emerged on land purchased from Jarrett Dean and Anderson White. The town's strategic location along the railway attracted residents from nearby communities, leading to its initial growth. The first post office was established on August 22, 1873, and by 1874, Gladewater was incorporated with a mayor alderman government. The discovery of oil on April 7, 1931, marked a significant turning point for Gladewater. The first oil well, located just a mile outside town in the Sabine River bottom, led to a population surge from about 500 to around 8,000 people during the 1930s. This oil boom transformed Gladewater into a bustling hub of activity, with numerous businesses and industries emerging to support the growing community.

Today, Gladewater proudly carries the title of the "Antique Capital of East Texas," a testament to its vibrant antique shopping scene. The city's historic downtown district, characterized by beautiful red brick streets, offers the perfect "walking town" atmosphere for visitors. Antique shops line the streets, each offering a unique array of treasures waiting to be discovered. The close proximity of these shops makes Gladewater an ideal destination for antique lovers. Visitors can easily park and explore multiple stores, each offering a distinct selection of items that cater to various tastes and interests. A few of my finds this week are below....

After spending the morning strolling through Gladewater’s charming downtown antique district, shoppers will undoubtedly work up an appetite. With so many unique stores to explore, hunting for hidden treasures can be both exciting and exhausting. Luckily, just a short walk away, Skipper’s Pier Coastal Cajun Kitchen is the perfect spot to refuel and relax. Known for its mouthwatering Cajun and Creole seafood, Skipper’s offers everything from fresh boiled crawfish and shrimp to crispy fried catfish and lobster grilled cheese. The portions are big and the prices are small, and may I just say, that I have never been disappointed. Whether you choose to dine indoors or enjoy the fresh air on their upstairs sundeck and patio, this laid back eatery is the ideal place to savor a delicious meal before heading back out for more antiquing adventures.

Gladewater's commitment to preserving its rich history while fostering a vibrant antique shopping scene exemplifies the city's motto: "Treasuring the past, while embracing the future." Whether you're a history enthusiast, an antique collector, or simply someone seeking a charming East Texas experience, Gladewater offers a unique blend of historical significance and contemporary draw.

So, the next time you find yourself in East Texas, take a stroll through Gladewater's historic streets, explore its numerous antique shops, and immerse yourself in the rich tapestry of a city that beautifully intertwines its storied past with its vibrant present...and as always...Happy Hunting!!
